The Draft Horse & Driving Club at UC Davis

The officers of the Draft Horse & Driving Club, would like to personally welcome you (yes that's YOU) to our brand new website! This is one of the main ways we will communicate with you about our drive times, events and other news.
What do we do?
We offer afforable driving lessons with our wonderful horses. In these lessons we instruct students on how to harness, hitch and of course, drive our wonderful Percheron mares!
With the assistance of the UC Davis Horse Barn, we are in charge of the upkeep and maintenance of our two drafties. We pride ourselves in teaching our students safe horse husbandry techniques and handling skills.
Students have the potential to learn:

Daily care and grooming

Equine nutritional requirements and exercise regiments

Basic first aid

Taking vital signs (TPR)

Identifying colic symptoms

Treating minor injuries

Administering oral medications and applying topical treatments

Learning when to call a veterinarian

Public driving safety with horses

How to work with our farriers, veterinarians, potential clients and university donors, as well as various Horse Barn visitors
Our students as well as our horses love to embark on various campus adventures. We frequent the Memorial Union Quad on Friday afternoons and give out free rides to anyone from fellow college students to university visitors to members of the Davis community. Occasionally we have Friday Fun Drives that have entertaining themes such as The Hunger Games.
Or if we need a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of main campus, we explore gorgeous locations like the Mondavi Vineyards or the Arboretum.
We are honored to host an amazing variety of guest speakers and visit prominent individuals in the draft horse and driving industry.
Whatever we choose to do, we will show you how to do it at a comfortable pace ideal for your learning process. This club embodies the perfect blend of educational prowess, leisurely fun and horses. We look forward to meeting you and incorporating you into our dynamic family!
